Mastan - Berlin

“You feel at home. The atmosphere is relaxed. The staff puts you at ease. No stress.”

The food is rooted in classic French recipes, served with a bistro flair—blood sausage with potato purée and baked apple, fish soup, Steak frites, clafoutis and a great selection of wines, especially appealing to Beaujolais lovers like myself. These are wines you rarely find in Berlin.

Mastan is a shared project, a team effort at work, a couple’s vision at home. Yann and Dorothée are truly inspiring.

After working for Alain Ducasse in Paris for several years, Yann—now owner and head chef at Mastan—and his wife Dorothée decided to start fresh in Berlin.

Never afraid of a challenge, they made the leap three years ago. After visiting two other spaces, they fell in love with this one—and Mastan was born. Their personal taste, attention to detail and even some hands-on handiwork, the project came together quickly, a sure sign it was meant to be. They opened Mastan in April 2023. The space used to be an Anglo-Saxon-style restaurant. Much of the interior—like the bar shelves, the banquette seating, and wooden walls—was already in place. They infused the space with their own style, which I’d describe as chic bistro with a feminine touch.

Yann said something I found very true when we discussed the idea of “chichi” (fussiness). He simply said: "You know, I cook a meal—je fais à manger." It’s good, using good products. It’s traditional yet modern. Straightforward and delicious. A true bistro.

The wine list alone is a reason to visit. As a Beaujolais fan, I was delighted to find an exceptional and unusual selection of French wines. Outside of the well-known Beaujolais Nouveau, the region doesn’t get as much attention as Bordeaux or Côtes du Rhône—but that’s changing, thanks to great winemakers like Pacalet.

Wednesday is Bouillabaisse night—a must for anyone from Marseille (like Yann). And now there's Steak Frites Thursday, another bistro classic.

Bref, this is a place where you feel at home. The warm interior, the welcoming team and the excellent food—everything you need to enjoy a great evening.

Thank you to Yann, Dorothée and the whole team for your warm welcome.
